The Mystery Ingredients in Other English Muffins Explained
In our last blog post, "No Mystery Ingredients Here: The Dam Good® English Muffin Difference," we reviewed all of the clean, simple ingredients used to make our sourdough English muffins, and established the fact that each ingredient can be found your own home kitchen.
As a follow-up, here’s a look at what those “mystery ingredients” in other English muffins actually do, and why they’re used in the recipes of other English muffin brands:
Preserve freshness and prevent mold:
- Calcium propionate
- Enzymes
- Sorbic acid
- Grain vinegar
Improve dough strength and texture:
- Wheat gluten
Add protein, flavor and tenderness:
- Soy lecithin
- Soy
- Whey
For this analysis, using a leading brand as an example, there is a total of 14 ingredients listed on the packaging--where 7 of them are artificial additives.
In other words, 50% of the ingredients used to make these English muffins are additives that cannot be found in your own home kitchen!
Compare that to our Original White sourdough English muffins, for example, where we have 6 ingredients, none of which are additives and all of which can be found in your own home kitchen:
- Blend of All-Purpose & High Gluten Flour
- Water
- Kosher Salt
- Dry Active Yeast
- Rice Flour
- Avocado Oil
Here you can plainly see that other ultra-processed English muffin brands have more additives in their formulations than Dam Good® English Muffins have in our total ingredient list for our Original White variety!
